The movie was fascinating to me because the short history of the electric car in the US pre-dated the awaking of my enviromental consciousness. I simply was not aware of the episode, so it was a terrific "who done" it detective story. Starting in the early nineties, a couple of automakers developed cool electric cars in response to the California Zero Emission Vehicle mandate while fighting against the mandate in all their power. After about a decade, the electric car was pulled out of the market one by one and crushed in the junk yard. While the film does not necessarily offer a 100% objective perspective, it is still a thought-provoking and entertaining detective story. Who killed the electric car? The car manufacturers? The CA state government? The consumers? The market? The battery technology? One thing I have come away from the film loud and clear is the short-sightedness of American automakers. I am not a car buff by any stretch of the imagination. Nonetheless it does not stop me from asking: why are there no US made hybrid cars on the road? Why are most of the Japanese car makers profit every year while the US automakers who keep pumping out bigger and "more powerful" cars lose money every year?
