High quality beef from a smaller scale, sustainable, organic ranch in northern California. The quality of the meat is excellent and the folks selling them at either the San Francisco Ferry Building or at bay area farmers' markets are very knowledgeable about their products. Just tell them what you want to make and they can recommend a cut that makes your dish shines. Besides beef, they also have pork, lamb, vitellone (young cow, not the traditional veal), buffalo and sausages.

The only place I have found this beef is at the Terra Linda Farmers Market. I would like to see it in other stores (like Whole Foods).. The quality and selection of cuts is GREAT.

The only place I've come across Prather Ranch meat has been the Ferry Plaza Market in San Francisco.  Some friends told me I should try it given my interest in finding local, sustainable meats.  Prather has a permanent store front at the Ferry Plaza and the service was great.  They told me a bit about Prather and gave me suggestions on what cuts to try.  The price was fairly comparable to my local butcher shop.  I really like the lean ground beef and thought it made good burgers even though my husband thought it tasted a bit too "healthy" and lean.  Overall, I'm glad I tried it but I wish their meat was easier to find.  There is an option to order directly from them but the portion is just too much for us as we don't eat that much red meat.
