Must see movie. Rented it from Netflix. Very compelling documentary about global warming and the environment. Very factual in its approach. Urges individuals to act now and makes case that individuals can make a difference and need to be willing to develop new habits. Immediately after watching this, we felt compelled and motivated to make some changes in our lives right then and there. We signed up for green energy through our utility company, canceled our newspaper, and switched over to online electronic statements (rather than paper statements that we had been receiving). The next day, we bought fluourescent energy saving bulbs for our house. We are contemplating a Prius for our next car purchase. This documentary definitely had an impact on us and made us think more about our environment and the impact that our actions have on it.

I drive a hybrid car, bring my own bags to grocery stores, and try to buy organic and local. So I thought that I did not need to see The Inconvenient Truth, that I knew how badly damaged the environment was, and that I was doing enough to spare the planet. The DVD, given as a present, has been sitting on our shelf and collecting dust for six months. Finally a friend came to visit last night and wanted to see the film. I obliged and I was shocked to see how much more eminent the threat of global warming was than I realized. It is not 200 years away, it is not 100 years away, it is in our lifetime, it is in our children’s prime years. For a long time last night, it seemed that I was in a nightmare that could not be shaken off. This nightmare was full of facts, backed by science, and presented by an intelligent man; this is the worst kind of nightmare one could have. I went to bed profoundly depressed. But when I woke up this morning, instead of staying in the dark mood, I felt energized by the movie. Yes, we screwed up, big time. But only we, the residents of this planet, can get ourselves out of this tremendous disaster. I love the analogy of a frog at the end of the movie. If it jumped into a boiling pot, it would jump right out (if not killed instantly of course). But if it jumped into a lukewarm pot, which was being heated up, it would just adjust to hotter and hotter temperature until it was too late. Every year, we get a dose of bad news, more heat waves, more species dying out, and more pollution. What do we do? We get used to the bad news and we continue doing what we do everyday. Katrina gave us a big jolt, but even that was soon forgotten. It’s time to act and to do something everyday to reduce our impact on the earth, on ourselves and on our future generations. Highly recommend this movie to everyone. Watch it once or watch it every week and then ACT everyday.

This movie really shows the evidence of what we are doing to our planet right in my face and prompts me to start making the best decision for our world to reduce my carbon footprint today, not tomorrow. It comes across as a sincere effort to educate. I have it saved on my TiVo and would show it to anybody coming to my house who is willing to watch. If I can get even one more person to do one thing differently, it's well worth it.

I know it's cliched to say so, but I have to do it: this documentary should be mandatory viewing for everyone. And that's everyone on the planet. And maybe on a few other planets too. Especially the 87% of Congressional Republicans who do not believe global warming is a manmade phenomenon (from a recent National Journal poll). Of course Gore tends to swing towards the extremist side of the spectrum in this movie (he makes it seem all but inevitable that sea levels will rise ~20 feet by the end of the century, when even the dire end of the scientific predictions from the recent UN Consensus Report indicated less than 3 feet), but in this case I don't think that is a bad thing. People need to be shocked out of their insensate complacency. And therein lies the high price of this documentary. The DVD is cheap to buy or rent, but it will exact a hefty price on your conscience.
