This is a 9 lb. block of coir which you put in water and is expands to 2 cu/ft of mulch for your garden or landscape. Coir is the outer husk of the coconut and is the by-product of harvesting coconut meat; coir is a 100% organic, biodegradable, renewable resource. Regular wood mulch can be contaminated with arsenic and other chemicals added to wood, it is also often dyed to give it a good color, and of course it comes from trees. Coir has the added benefit of not giving splinters to little feet or to the gardener spreading the mulch. It is more expensive than regular wood mulch but is supposed to last longer and deter slugs.
