I am not a big gardener. My criteria for yard care is low maintenance, low water need, no thorns, and non-toxic plants and materials needed to maintain the garden. That means I am not one to build a big compost bin to make my own compost to feed my small yard. E. B. Stone is a good compromise on convenience and friendliness to the environment. It came in powdered form so it's easy to apply. Since it is an organic product, it is slow releasing and doesn't give the instant nutrient boost that synthetic fertilizers do, which can promote quick new growth in a short time and attract garden pests. It also doesn't have synthetic chemicals that can sip deep into the ground to the bay estuary water table (I live on landfill land.) It doesn't improve soil structure as compost does but it is a good choice for me.
