Gotta love Canadians! They invented this really cool alternative to wood logs for your fireplace. I happened upon Java Logs at my local Albertsons (luckily they are also available at Ralphs, Walgreens, Whole Foods, Bristol Farms, and Wild Oats stores).
Java Logs are a compressed log made from used coffee grounds and a biodegradable vegetable wax. It burns cleaner than wood, has a nice crackling sound, bright flames and no smell, and diverts a ton of coffee waste from landfills. A Java Log burns for 3 hours, about the same as a wood log the same size.
The packaging is 100% recycled material. Each log is wrapped in paper and is really easy to light, like a Duraflame. Six logs come in a case (also recycled cardboard).
Unfortunately, Java Logs are not inexpensive. At Albertson's, a box of 6 Java Logs costs $20 vs. a bundle of about 8 wood logs costs $4. But you feel so much better that you are not killing trees, it's worth it if you can afford it.
I would love to see every fireplace burning Java Logs, especially restaurants, hotels, ski resorts that go through a ton of logs every year. But I am not sure it would be considered "economically feasible" even though it is environmentally logical.
