Since I have been yapping about school lunches and reusable water bottles, I want to mention that our friend Michelle has a sale on kids’ Sigg bottles right now. The lowest prices I have seen yet. Also check out my review and Organicpicks users’ reviews on these adorable bottles.

25% off at Elephant pharmacy Walnut Creek
July 29, 2007

Indeed, Elephant pharmacy is openning another store (their 4th). This time it is in Walnute Creek. For those who don’t know about Elephant pharmacy, it is what I’d call a wellness pharmacy, where you can find health-boosting supplements, better and greener lotions and potions, some food, and surprising good toys (not the plastic junk I hate so much). They also offer free classes.

On August 1st, they are hosting a friends and family party, where they have 25% off throughout the entire store. What’s a party without music and food? They have organic hors d’oeuvres and live music with Liberty Street Jazz.

Then on August 4th - the grand opening day - they will give away free Elephant tote bag full of feel-good produts for the first 100 customers. Did I mention free samples? Too bad I don’t live in East Bay. Driving all the way there to get free stuff seems like an anti-green thing to do…

I don’t work for them nor get paid by them, though I really think they should pay me for raving about their stores, and for shopping there often. To get more details, visit Elephant Pharmacy.

Free Coffee and Paper on Caltrain
June 14, 2007

In attempt to promote ridership at some of the less popular stations, Caltrain is offering free coffee and morning paper to riders. The “newspaper, coffee and Caltrain – your day is off to a great start” campaign kicked off on Tuesday at the Hayward Park Station. Unfortunately, according to KCBS the campaign did not show any traction on the first day. The promotion moves to Burlingame on Thursday (June 14th) and then to Palo Alto and Mountain View next week. The promotion runs from 5:45am to 9am each of these days and includes free train ticket raffles.

Admittedly, Caltrain has not done a great job promoting the campaign since there has virtually been no mention on their site or in the local news. However, encouraging public transportation is a worthy cause so let’s try to spread the word for Caltrain. And by the way, if anyone has information on which days the promotion will come to Palo Alto and Mountain View, please drop me a line.

Home Improvement at Good Prices and for Good Cause

I’m on a reuse and recycle kick (also see High Fashion Twist to Old Swap Meet Concept) so I was very excited to discover Habitat ReStore, a chain of stores that sell both new and used building materials and operated by Habitat for Humanity. For those of you unfamiliar with Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI), it is a non-profit organization that builds or rehabilitates houses (through volunteers and donations) for families in need. These homes are sold to homeowners at no profit with affordable financing and HFHI requires the homeowners to put in sweat equity alongside the volunteers to make their home a reality. Habitat’s success and survival depends largely on community donations in form of volunteers, cash and materials. Most of the materials found in the Habitat Restores are donated by building stores, construction companies or from demolitions. A mix of new and salvaged materials can be found at a fraction of regular retail prices. At the Grass Valley, CA location, almost any type of construction materials can be found, from nails to windows and doors to flooring materials. The new lumber was about 50% of home improvement store prices and salvaged fixtures like lights are less than many of the consignment stores. Salvage stores are obviously not new in concept. However, the Habitat Restores not only offer great deals and help the environment through reuse but support a worthy cause to boot.
