3 Reasons Why I’m Optimistic Today

I woke up this morning with a sense of optimism. Why?
Three things happened yesterday that made me think that there’s hope for our environment after all.

1. After a very successful pilot program, our waste management company finally rolled out a county-wide curbside pick-up program for household batteries and cell phones recycling. As I took my morning walk, I noticed that many of my neighbors had put out large bags of batteries alongside their other recyclables. It made me realize that people are quietly paying attention to the hazards of electronic waste but just needed a convenient way to take action.
2. While standing in line at the grocery store, I noticed that 2 out of the 4 people (in front me) had either brought their own canvas bags or were reusing their plastic bags from a previous trip. Although not 100%, at least half of these people have taken a first step to reusing.
3. It is “Leaf Week” at school and the children explored an adjacent garden, searching for different leaves and talked about how seeds fall and find ways to grow into new plants. My daughter came home and insisted that we shake all of our plants for seeds so they can rest for the winter and grow in the spring. She settled on burying a seed pod from our calla lily plant and is resolved to check on it every day. I now have hopes that she will give up her fantasy of being a princess (like Sleeping Beauty) and may one day be a botanist or horticulturist.
Although these things are rather mundane and small in scale, for me, they are indicators of change and hope. For these reasons, I am optimistic today
