Luring Your Kids into Eating Healthy School Lunches

Our fishing expedition on Flathead Lake this summer was comical. Despite our best efforts, we were unable to catch anything, even though the boat next to us was reeling in fish every time we looked! Clearly, there was something we weren’t doing right. As a man from the next boat yelled over to us, “What kind of bait are you using?” a crazy thought entered into my mind: Feeding children is a lot like fishing – you have to have the right lure, or they won’t bite! Packing desirable school lunches is a lot like the fine art of selecting an appealing lure while fishing. Try some of these stress-free strategies for packing lunches that are healthy for your kids and the environment. They’ll be sure to bite!

Here are a variety of ideas for some fun and interesting lunches. Don’t forget to include fruits or vegetables, protein and whole grains every day.

Sandwich Alternatives:

Make Ahead…

Thermos Treasures…

Container Combinations…for kids to assemble and snack on themselves

Packing an appealing school lunch will lure your children into eating well, help them to be more successful in school, and help the planet, too. Don’t be caught with the wrong bait, or your kids might throw it back!

Great info! I wish I hadn’t been such a pill for my mother growing up, persuading her to buy the bad stuff. This is great for when I decide to have little ones of my own :)

So I have to ask — do the resealable drink containers leak? For the first time, I will be packing my preschooler a lunch (she’s now going full day) but I’m afraid a four year old will not be diligent enough to keep the drink upright. I hate the waste of drink boxes but I’m afraid of milk and juice all over her lunch.

In my experience, the sigg bottles are reasonable in the leak department but you have to screw it on really tight and make sure the rubber ring in the nozzle is still there - I lost one of mine and it does leak. If I leave it horizontal in my bag for a while, I have had it leak a bit. However, most of the lunch bags now have enough room to hold the bottles upright. Sometimes, I wrap a cloth napkin around my daughter’s sigg bottle so I don’t have to worry (leak or the condensation) - and she can use it to wipe up after eating.

The sigg bottles that I have only snap shut if they close the spout all the way. So, it is a great check for the kids - if they can’t close the lid, they need to fix it. Mine have never leaked. I also stock a few rings for customers who have emergencies :-) We have them in our online shop: http://www.whatscooking.info

Ladies, thanks for the input. I was always leary of the bottles. But looks like I’ll be getting two for my little one!
